I put these pages together to help you understand how some aftermarket parts are installed and give you a better understanding why the parts are needed in keeping your 727 safe and last round after round.

Installing the 727 front billet steel & billet aluminum drum

part # CRT-K123900 & CRT-1239900S

Chrysler made a few different rear drums. Some had a wide land and had a narrow land. If your rear drum has a narrow land, it will rub the billet front drum. The blue drum on the right, shows a wide land. You can machine your stock rear drum to .195 or if you have extra drums, find a wide land drum and install it. Make sure your front drum does not rub the rear drum. When using a TransBrake or reverse manual valve body  useall 15 springs. Make sure your springs are 1.400 in length. You can install5 thick or 6 thin clutches. Set clutch pack clearance to .012-.014 per clutch.Steel drum use teflon rings. Aluminum drum with out brass insert use crome rings.

Question: Do I need a billet steel drum for the street?  As most of us Mopar guys know, if a sprage fails the front drum can spin up to 2.2 times the engine RPMs. The stock drum can NOT withstand that rpm and can explode without warning.  We at CRT recommend installing a billet steel drum on any race car or any street car making over 500 HP

Question: Do I use a Billet steel drum or aluminum drum? For street cars, only use the steel front drum. On race
cars, both will work. The aluminum drum does require band adjustments and fluid & filter changes every 20-25
passes. CRT also recommends doing the first band adjustment on the 5th pass when using aluminum drum.  The
steel drum requires band adjustments once a year. CRT offers both the steel & aluminum drums. Starting at
  515.00 & up.

Installation: Full roller plantary gear set part #22224BKSS

Remove washers # 4,5,7 The new planetary's come with torrington bearing for these locations. Also remove # 8 thrust plate ( rear annulus ). Retain # 6 thrust plate at sun shell. End play set at .008-.015 Modifications to output shaft: You need to chamfer this ( see pic below) edge to prevent cutting seal upon installation of output shaft into new rear support. A little care is required when assembling as not to rip the seal. Use trans gel to lube seal.

Chamfer output shaft when using rear roller kit 22754K also.

Installing a rear vent on 727s

On 727s & 904s with Trans Brake or reverse pattern valve bodies, CRT recommends that you relocate the vent to the rear of the case. The stock vent is in the pump cover, fluid will leak out of the stock vent when using a trans brake. Drill  the stock vent hole with a 11/23 drill bit, then tap the hole using a 1/8 pipe tap. Install 1/8 pipe plug. drill hole at the 11 O clock piston in the rear of case as shown in picture above and install new vent. Also block off the feed hole in the park gear, or you will have fluid spitting out the vent. See pic below

Instruction : CRT & A&A reverse manual valve body with low band apply

Install all 15 springs into the front drum. If your piston only has 10 springs, CRT offers the 15 spring pistons and new springs. Use the late 1.40 springs only.

Stock clutches will work. Alto red racing clutches work better. Set front clutch at .070 - 0.79 .

Band adjustment = front band 72 inch lbs back off 2 turns. Rear band 72 inch lbs back off 2&1/4 turns.

Lever ratios = 3.2 & 3.8 works good. 4.2 with 62-70 front servo and 2 springs works best. Never use the 5.0 lever with this valve body. Heavy duty band strut will prevent strut from bending.

If your case has a orifice restrictor ( common with TF-2 shift kits ) remove it.

You can use a stock dacron ( works best) or a brass high flow filter.

CRT has found that ATF+3 transmission fluid works the best.
Made by Mopar or Pennsoil Dextron II or III work well also

Shim rear servo, or install the billet servo kit.
Shim front servo 71 & later, or install 62-70 billet servo kit.
Install teflon sealing rings on pump stator .Never do 1st gear burn outs in water box. Always use SFI shield / blanket. For your safty, its best to install a front billet drum.

 Instruction : A&A Trans-Brake

Same as above plus: relocate vent to rear of case. Drill case for connector using a 11/23 drill bit. Tap the drilled hole with a 1/8 pipe tap. Install connector.

Drill 1/16 ( .063 ) bleed hole in the front drum in the area behind the piston. Drill from the inside-out placing the hole as close to the sealing surface as possible. Don't nick the seal surface. Drill at an angle for more drilling room. Drilling this hole is for trans brake valve bodies only. DO NOT drill this hole unless using a trans brake valve body.

Drilling bleed hole is for Trans Brake units only. DO NOT drill when using foot brake brake valve body.

Machine operation on reaction support to unrestict the 1971 and up feed hole. Rigid inspection of the reaction support is essential, especially for wear in the ring groove area. The trick here is to open up the oil feed hole by removing the metal between the two sealing rings. Bridgeport method: point the 3/16 oil feed hole straight up and clamp in a vise. Using a 7/32 end mill, cut with a multiple pattern ( .050-.075 deep per pass ) in one side and out the other until the 1/4 cross feed is fully exposed.- Hand grind method. A right angle grinder with a 1/8 wheel can be used edgewise in the groove to achieve a rough but similar results.

Before and After Reaction Support Mods

CRT offers this support.
